BROWN MARMORATED STINK BUG - BMSB 2019-20 SEASON CHANGES
Are you ready? Will this effect your import orders? Add costs and transit time to your deliveries?
The Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has released the latest requirements regarding mandatory pre-shipment fumigation for imports into Australia, to protect against Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs over the 2019/2020 high risk season.
These requirements are effective from loading on 1 September 2019 to arrival in Australian territory on 31 May 2020 (inclusive).
- Certain goods manufactured in, or shipped from target risk countries, and/or
- vessels that berth at, load or tranship from target risk countries
The new seasonal measures will apply to goods that are manufactured in, or shipped from, these countries:
Albania, France, North Macedonia, Andorra, Georgia, Romania, Armenia, Germany, Russia, Austria, Greece, Serbia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Spain, Bulgaria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Canada, Luxembourg, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, United States of America, Czech Republic, Netherlands
** Japan (heightened vessel surveillance will be the only measure applied).
Any vessel that tranships or loads goods from these countries are also subject to heightened vessel surveillance.
It is preferable to perform fumigation at origin. Sealed, six hard-sided containers may be fumigated on arrival into Australia if necessary but for all open top, flat rack, and breakbulk consignments, fumigation must be performed before cargo arrives into Australia.
LCL sea freight consignments will be fumigated at origin, at transhipment ports, or upon arrival in Australia by the carrier/master co-loader, depending on the routing or service option.

As with previous BMSB risk seasons, we all must comply with these measures. Throughout the season the department will continue to review these measures based on detections of BMSB and the risk pathways and make any necessary adjustments. We will be sure to keep you informed of these changes as the details come to hand.
